The first artzero children’s art workshop in Greece was held in 2000 on Sifnos, a small island in the Cyclades with a resident population of approximately 2500 people. The project was organised with the help of local teachers and the primary school. Projects have continued in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and the majority of the children on the island aged between 6 and 12 have been able to participate. In 2003, a local committee was established to further develop projects. Plans are now in place for a twice yearly programme funded by the sale of calendars and cards based on the children’s pictures. This non-profit making venture is organised by the committee, with the help of the primary school, teachers, the association of parents and the local cultural association.
artzero children’s art is discussing the possibility of developing the programme on other islands in Greece with ‘The Friends of the Greek Islands and the Sea’ – an organisation promoting the development of folk culture on the Greek islands.
There are also plans to run a pilot project in collaboration with a primary school on a neighbouring island, Syros in 2006.
